Definition
A Work Item is how Serpent tracks a single piece of Salesforce work, one feature or fix, from first change through review to release. It is a Serpent concept rather than standard Salesforce vocabulary, closest in spirit to a ticket paired with a Git branch: creating a Work Item sets up its branch and tracks the metadata that changes within its scope, so a developer works on the Salesforce changes instead of creating, naming, and later cleaning up branches by hand. Because change is tracked at the Work Item level, the drift and merge pain of long-lived feature branches is far less common, and stale branches do not accumulate. A Work Item replaces the older, error-prone habit of moving metadata with change sets, giving each change a reviewable, releasable home instead.
How it works in Serpent
In Serpent, Work Items live inside a project and inherit its connected orgs and review policy. When a Work Item is ready it goes through a review request, Serpent's equivalent of a pull request, and approved work ships as part of a release. Branch creation depends on the project's source control being connected, so if no branch appears for a new Work Item, connecting source control in Project Settings resolves it.
