Metadata Coverage Report
Salesforce's official reference for which metadata types the Metadata API and Tooling API support, and how completely.
Definition
The Metadata Coverage Report is Salesforce's official, searchable reference documenting every metadata type and whether it's supported by the Metadata API, the Tooling API, or both, including finer detail like whether a type supports retrieve, deploy, or source tracking specifically. Not every configurable thing in Salesforce Setup has full API coverage, some metadata types are retrieve-only, some aren't source-tracked in scratch orgs, and a few have no API support at all. DevOps teams check the report before assuming a newly adopted feature or object type can be automated the same way existing metadata is, since building a pipeline around an unsupported type usually surfaces as a confusing partial failure rather than a clear error. Our metadata management guide covers working around coverage gaps.
How it works in Serpent
Serpent's release pipeline is built around what the platform's APIs actually support, so gaps the Metadata Coverage Report documents don't turn into silent surprises mid-deployment. See release management in Serpent for how metadata moves through a pipeline.
